Thomas played one-off games for two different clubs last year.
He played a game for the Nhill Tigers in western Victoria as part of The Carlton Draft series, where he inspired the Tigers to a two-point drought-breaking win.
The Tigers hadn’t tasted victory in 1029 days.
Thomas also played a game in the reserves for MPNFL outfit Sorrento. He played for the Sharks in 2021 as well.
But on Saturday he will take the field for a new side, as he explained on Thursday.
Speaking on Triple M’s Mid-Week Rub, the 2010 AFL premiership player said it was a favour for a friend.
“I went down and helped the Sharks out, playing in the twos, because they were depleted of numbers (last year),” he said.
“And then a mate of mine who has some stuff to do in and around the Old Paradians, over a few beers, we were talking about that, and he said, ‘Well, we’ve got some injuries, would you consider helping us out at some point?’
“After a few beers, (you say) ‘Of course, mate! No dramas, hit me up whenever’. The hit me up came, so here I come: Saturday, down at the Old Paradians’ ground in Bundoora.”
Thomas was playfully asked by Damien Barrett if he was getting paid to make the appearance.
“I am a nice guy; I went down and played at Sorrento and got paid nothing — I actually lost (money), because I was paying to get in because it was an away game. Eight dollars on the gate.,” Thomas said.
“And I expect the same to be happening this weekend, which did catch me a little bit by surprise when I had to sign a stat dec (saying that I wouldn’t be paid).”
“So, I went to training last night; I’ve got a sore knee and a sore ankle already.
“I think I’m just going to peruse the halfback flank and try have about 40 (possessions).
The club’s website posted a statement ahead of the game on Saturday.
“When the call went out to Dale Thomas to do an mate a favour and come and help the OPs, he was more than happy to oblige,” it reads.
“The 2010 premiership, and All-Australian star will be pulling on the famous purple, green and blue this Saturday vs Whitefriars at the Garvey.”
Old Paradians are sitting last on the ladder with one win, while Whitefriars are fourth.
