DRIVERS are only just realising what the button with the “weird squiggles” on your dashboard really does – and it’s essential for winter.
A motoring whizz posted a TikTok clip about the button, which shows a car on top of two squiggles with the word “OFF” next to it.
They said: “Don’t press this button on the car indiscriminately – otherwise it is very dangerous.
“It is a car anti-skid button. It is turned on by default.
“If it is turned off, it will greatly increase the risk of sideslip, rollover and loss of control during driving.”
Traction control, which stops you from skidding, has been a requirement on all new motors since 2011.
You may well have never even noticed the traction control button – but it makes your car far safer.
Experts say there is rarely a good reason to switch off traction control while on the road in normal conditions.
The anti-skid system can stop you losing control before you are able to react behind the wheel.
But there are times when you might want to disable the system by pressing the button with the “weird squiggles”.
If you are driving on snow or ice during the winter, then your tyres will lose a lot of grip.
Your traction control will detect the spinning wheels and limit power – meaning you could get stuck.
Turning off traction control will give you more wheelspin to power through the slippery road surface.
A motoring whizz drove a new EV with a feature supposed to put “fun back into driving” – but says it’s pointless and no one will use it.
