A content creator on YouTube has inserted Danny DeVito’s Frank Reynolds from It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia into some of the cutscenes from The Last of Us. The footage features a few sections from The Last of Us which have been comically amplified by Frank Reynolds’ presence and antics. The video is yet another creation from a YouTuber who has previously published other similar videos of unlikely worlds colliding.
The grim atmosphere of The Last of Us leaves almost no room for comedic relief. Developed by Naughty Dog and published by Sony, The Last of Us follows the story of Joel and Ellie, a pair that travels across the United States while enduring many challenges and struggles along the way. During their extensive quest, death and despair are omnipresent, and the narrative doesn’t look to comedy to steer away from the drama. While there are moments of reprieve in between the chaos, players are regularly subjected to the apocalypse’s unforgiving circumstances. Therefore, gamers have to look elsewhere to find laughter, which leads them to the internet.
By editing Frank Reynolds from It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia into the world of The Last of Us, YouTube creator and meme maker eli_handle_b․wav completely changes the overall experience. The footage, entitled Frank Reynolds in The Last of Us, sees Frank, played by Danny DeVito, acting as he does in the show while characters from The Last of Us seemingly react to his actions. Frank eats, gargles beer, grunts, and plays with his toe knife as Ellie, Henry, Jerry, and Tess interact with him. There is no sight of Joel in the video, though, as only a handful of characters from the game appear alongside Frank.
The video’s creator, eli_handle_b․wav, has explored crossovers like this in the past, using similar software to deliver their creative visions. By using the After Effects, Mocha Pro, and Adobe Premier programs, they’ve been able to pair up Woody from the Toy Story franchise and the Van der Linde gang from Red Dead Redemption 2, make the Penguins of Madagascar pilot the Nautiloid in Baldur’s Gate 3, let Puss in Boots explore the Lands Between from Elden Ring, and so on.
It’s always fun to see content creators cleverly using software programs to bring unique ideas to fruition, especially when it involves two properties with wildly different tones. This video is yet another impressive video game crossover made by eli_handle_b․wav that shows what is possible with editing technology.
