Summer ’23 is here, and the air is full of possibility.
To quote queen Natasha Bedingfield, the upcoming months are ‘unwritten’, and you can be anything you want to be.
And we’re here with a suggestion. Why not trying being a rat?
Okay, so of all the creatures in the animal kingdom, a rat doesn’t exactly scream hot, carefree and fun.
You’re more likely to think of a long-tailed rodent scuttling along in the dank darkness.
But it’s time to reframe the narrative, and welcome in your rat girl summer.
When Megan Thee Stallion introduced us to hot girl summer, we grabbed the concept with both hands.
As the icon herself explained: ‘Being a Hot Girl is about being unapologetically YOU, having fun, being confident, living YOUR truth, being the life of the party etc.’
A rat girl summer, though it might sound less appealing, is hot girl summer adjacent.
The phrase was coined by screenwriter and TikTok creator, Lola, who tells us to ’embrace the rodent energy.’
Lola said: ‘We’re scurrying around the streets, we’re nibbling our little snacks and generally finding ourselves in places we have no business being in.’
It’s giving feral and mischievous – and we’re here for it.
In a second video, Lola clarified the rules of rat girl summer.
The first: ‘You have to go outside,’ said Lola. ‘You cannot scurry in bed, you cannot scurry on your couch.’ Essentially, rat girl summer is not akin to goblin mode, you can’t be a rat at home. Get out and socialise, meet new people and see where it takes you.
Next – and we particularly enjoy this one: ‘We’re eating and we’re enjoying eating,’ said Lola.
‘Eating nourishing meals so you can make mischief and cause mayhem is in,’ said Lola.
You need to fuel all that ratty-ness, so go to the BBQs, the picnics and hit up that ice cream van – this is about banishing the damaging ‘summer body’ myth, and loving yourself. ‘We’re eating and having fun,’ says Lola.
Thirdly: ‘We’re killing the cringe… Whatever you drive, your whimsy, is telling you that you want to do, follow that urge.’
Be bold, be spontaneous and DGAF what anyone else thinks.
And finally, ‘no overthinking.’ Lola said: ‘You think a rat thinks twice before stealing a slice of pizza and scurrying across the subway platform? No. We’re going with our gut. We’re going with our intuition.’
So being a rat girl this summer is all about banishing that inner critic, and giving yourself permission to be free and spontaneous.
Who knew a rodent could be so empowering?
Rat girl summer has taken off on TikTok, with Lola’s initial video has already been viewed 1.6 million times.
‘Empty head, full stomach, all scurrying, no brakes,’ said one commenter, summing up the concept nicely. ‘This is actually really inspirational,’ wrote another.
While there has been some querying over the rodent name, here at Metro HQ we’re fully on board.
Do what you want, eat what you want, don’t overthink, and live your best life. As Lola said: ‘Go forth and scurry.’
